Photoshop Friday #15 VIDEO Instructions! :D

I’m back with the instructions for this week’s PS Friday, and boy did I do something cool this time. :D

I actually recorded a video segment for part of PSF this week. Sorry if I sound tired.. I was up pretty late reveling in geekiness (and yeah, we beat up all the monsters, in case you wondered…).

So this week’s layout is right here:

Photoshop Friday #15 - click for larger

The coolest thing about it (well, in my opinion, anyway), is that the whole thing was done in PSE, including the big curving shape. AND just to test out my New Technology, I’ve recorded a video segment to show you how to put together that big curving shape, and then we’ll go through the rest of the instructions on the blog.

So you can be my Guinea Pig Experiment #35 (what happened to Guinea Pigs 1-34? Don’t ask…)

Video Demo for curving shape in PSE

Click on the image below, and it will launch a new browser window with the video in it. I recorded the instructions for the curving element you see in this week’s layout.  (You will need a high speed internet connection to view it, okay? oh, and it might take a little while to start up, so be patient for up to a couple of minutes…) Ready? GO!

Okay, how did that work for you? Were you able to see it? Did it make sense? Did it take a long time to download?

Completing the Layout

Alright, now that you have your curving shape, you can place your other layout components.

  1. For my background paper (and most of the title), I used the A Boy digital kit from Jackie Eckles. Awesome stuff in there.
  2. To match the accents in the background paper, I added a stroked line on the edges of my curving shape. I did this by Ctrl-clicking on the thumbnail of that layer in my layers palette, creating a new layer, and stroking the selection (Edit > Stroke Selection) with about 5 pixels of black.
  3. I used 5 photos - one focal photo and 4 accent photos arranged as a grid. I placed them on layers behind my curving shape.
  4. Then I created a new layer, placed it behind the photos, and added a white-filled rectangle marquee shape.
  5. I rounded the corners of my top left and top right photos, and all four corners of my photo mat using a corner rounder brush with my eraser tool. I used a brush from Katie Pertiet’s Deco Scissors pack. Next week we’ll go over how to round corners, okay? :)
  6. I split apart the title strip from Jackie’s A Boy kit (which says “My Boy”), and in the middle I added some descriptive words over the curving strip in a rough typewriter font.

And that’s it! I hope you enjoy this week’s video! I’d love to hear what you think of it! :D

Have a great weekend!

-Jessica

Hey
Just wanted to say I loved your WoW layout! I play too! Yep been playing for quite a while now (I played through Beta). I have a lvl 60 orc hunter lvl and a lvl 43 undead priest (plus a 60 night elf hunter before I found "the dark side" hahaha)
Currently taking a break from WoW to concentrate on other things in my life. It sure is a time sink! As you know ;)
get them monsters!

Wowee! Jessica, that was awesome! Very easy to load up... not long at all. And, it was VERY clear... the screen images were clear and your instructions were clear! WTG... a "real" lesson w/your voice! How cool is modern technology or what? :)

I love your Photoshop Fridays!!! Thank you!
Would you know where to go to have custom greeting cards printed with your own photo? Can you recommend any websites for that?
Also what does SOOC mean?
Thanks, Eleni

so awesome! I'm a PSCS2 user and was always convinced you couldn't do curves in PSE. I learned quite a few things today - thanks!! :)

Awesome...Would love to have been inside your head when you were coming up with your initial concept...always cool to see these things come to fruition. Easy download, made it sound so easy...and I just downloaded pse5 last night...loving it so far!

Ok I saw your WoW layout in CK and just started cracking up and I had to show my DH to prove that the worlds of Warcraft and scrapbooking DO intersect (and it's not just me)!! We both had lvl 60 alliance characters on one server and then switched to rogues on the "dark side" on another before giving up the game due to time constraints :) BTW totally off topic, but that South Park meets WoW season premiere last week was hilarious....Love your photoshop Fridays!

HOW did you resize your toolbar?? I love how yours are side by side...I can only get mine to separate by grabbing the grip at the top of the toolbar...not what i want! Give a girl a hint? PS Our children were twins separated at birth...off to look for a photo.

k, next question...when I went to distort>shear, I inadvertently clicked on the little square to adjust the shear, and created another little square that I was able to manipulate...Did you know about this? Subsquent clicking revealed that I had not imagined what I had just done, and that I could, in fact, make quite an interstingly bizarre line...Not sure whether this discovery will change my world, but I love these little photoshop moments...

Jess!! Photoshop owes you a cut of their revenue. After your video tutorial, I'm convinced that a girl as smart as you could teach a girl like me how to do some fantastic things! No need to wonder why you're my favorite! This ROCKS!

Very cool! I loved being able to see the instructions in action. I will say, it helps to know a bit about using graphics programs in general, but I think beginners can get it too. They may have to re-play it once or twice as they follow along. I thought the instructions were very clear.

Jessica, tonight I just stumbled on your blog and am amazed. I have been trying to figure out whether I want to be a paper or digital scrapper. I have been investing a lot of time in improving my digital skills, but have struggled a bit with recreating my "paper style" digitally. Your stuff is amazing and tutorials fantastic. The video loaded quickly and was easy to watch and follow. You have a new fan!

Awesome video! Thanks so much for taking the time to make it. Doing the happy dance I was actually able to do it by following along and then did it again from memory.

I have a slooow dial up and your video was the first in a long time that I've been able to follow. I didn't time the download because I went off to make a cup of tea. But it was not slow!
Great to know PSE 5 has all these great features that PS has.
I've been using this filter a lot lately; to make beads and strings on tags lie more gracefully on the page. I'm off to do a page like yours!
