Strawberry Ice Cream, Goot Beer Jelly Beans, Emotional food

Sometimes I wish there were more days in a weekend. I can’t be the only one who wishes that. :)

We had a good one, though - yard and housework, time together, homemade strawberry ice cream.

We made it using my grandpa’s recipe:

Strawberry Ice Cream

2 pints strawberries, pureed

1 1/2 c. heavy cream

3 tbs. fresh lemon juice

1/2 c. plus 2 tbs. super-fine sugar

Puree strawberries, mix all ingredients together, and freeze in an ice cream maker.

 That’s it!

It is quite tart, and sooo good. I can remember lots of family parties with my grandpa out on their front porch, tending the ice cream mixer, adding ice and salt. I would hang out with him and we’d talk over the dull roar of the mixer. And of course I remember the incredible flavor of this strawberry ice cream when it was done - everyone had their scoop in a styrofoam bowl with a plastic spoon, and it was pure heaven.

It’s amazing how emotional food can be sometimes, isn’t it?

I’m heading to Nisa’s wedding this weekend. SO excited for that! I get to see almost ALL of my Minnesota ladies, and of course, I get to attend my first-ever non-LDS wedding. Weird, I know! But most of my non-LDS friends were already married (or staunchly single) by the time I met them. I’m looking forward to the weekend. :)

I’ll be over at Artsy Tartsy in Plymouth from 12-2 on Saturday the 26th, if you live locally and want to stop on by! :D

The weekend after that, I’ll be in Buffalo for CKC. So excited to meet everyone there! I’m teaching 6 classes again, and hanging out at the Friday night crop.

And one more thing. I’ll be launching my web site. Our first class will be Digital 1, with other classes to follow. So, SO excited about this. Sorry for the total teaser there, but more info is coming  SOON, I promise. :)

Funny

Jared has this thing for root beer (which I don’t like), and you already know that I have a thing for popcorn (which he doesn’t like). I also happen to like the popcorn Jelly Bellys. mmmm. He has to be careful dipping into a bag of Jelly Bellys, so he doesn’t accidentally pick a popcorn one (he calls them the bogey-flavored ones after Bertie Botts’ Every Flavor Beans from Harry Potter).

So last week when I was gone, he bought a bag of Jelly Bellys (our Super Target has all the flavors arranged in individual containers, so you can mix your own bag). Of course he excluded popcorn ones, but he added in root beer ones. I didn’t know until I pulled a few out while I was typing, popped them in my mouth, and bleh! The only thing worse than real root beer is a root beer-flavored jelly bean. Yuck.

So I said (Partly, wondering whether she would like them, and partly because I knew I didn’t. :P), “Rowen, do you want a candy?”

I handed her the brown jelly bean.

She bit down on it, wrinkled up her face and said, “Mama, this one doesn’t taste very good.”

I said, “That’s a root beer one”

She said, “Can I put it in the garbage?”

“Yes.” Ah, a girl after my own heart, there.

At dinner that night, she said, “Daddy, mama gave me a goot beer jelly bean, but it didn’t taste very good, and I threw it in the garbage.”

He laughed, and said, “Oh, so you don’t like the root beer jelly beans?”

“No.”

Do you like the popcorn ones?

“Yes!”

Heh. Victory. ;)

I don’t know if this is another example of emotional food or not. Do you have recipes that are emotional or sentimental in some way?

I was actually a bridesmaid for my very first non-LDS wedding. So, so different than what I've ever been to! The bride was amazed when I told her how simple a typical LDS reception is compared to the huge blowout that she had. It was fun though. To add a little enjoyment to it, she created a murder mystery that several of us took part in throughout the night. :)

Hooray for classes - I can't wait! And for the record, I like root beer and popcorn. My tummy is rumbling from thoughts of your strawberry ice cream. I've got to make me some.

Mmmm, comfort food! I have several, I'm very emotionally attached to food. That's no surprise, considering my pants size. But I'm happy, so who cares!

A constant fave: homeade chicken noodle soup
2 cups flour
4 eggs
Dash salt
Mix well and roll out as thin as possible
Cut into strips and let air dry
Add to your fave chicken broth, torn chicken, carrots, celery soup base
Cook approx. 25-30 mins on med high

This one was lovingly made many times with my mom, my grandma and my siblings while growing up.

Another fun one that reminds me of any special dinner at Grandma Ruthie's house: Special Grape Juice
1 part lemonade
1 part grape juice (grandma's own bottled juice, but regular frozen works nowadays)

This one will always remind me of Grandma! :)

And a last one: Strawberry Shortcake Gone Chocolate
1 Betty Crocker Triple Chocolate cake mix
Bake to specifications
Lots of sliced fresh strawberries
1 tub Extra Creamy Cool Whip (or the real stuff if you're feeling sassy)
Top each piece of cake with a glob of cool whip and as many strawberries as you like. Mmmmm..

This one I invented because Jeff and I love chocolate, and don't like cake frosting so much. This was originally just for birthdays, but any special day gets it too.

OH ya homemade peach icecream, so reminds me of home, bbq's and my Mom, who is no longer with us.

After we were Married, when ever we all got together at Mom & Dad's my Mom would fix us her breakfast special. Eggs mixed with sausage and fried potatos, umm not to good for the waist line but oh so yummy. :)

Sorry but I have to side with Jared on the jelly bean flavors. I love rootbeer and popcorn, ah, not so much :)

I so wish I was close enough to go to CKC and take your classes!!!! and the teaser about your classes on line is KILLIN ME :)

Happy Monday

I am still laughing at your story. Great one! :D

A grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of tomato soup. That always makes my world tilt back to an easier time and far away from the hectic nature it is now.

My husband has been deployed two and a half years of my eldest son's almost four year existence. My husband hates fish..won't even eat fish sticks or tuna salad.
Now my eldest won't eat fish...I'm unsure if it's a semi-conscious tribute to his daddy, (he was here for 12 months 05/06), or a genetically predisposed condition..funny either way..

Hey there! I am excited to meet you at Artsy Tartsy on Saturday and maybe I'll even bring you some root beer, oops, I mean popcorn Jelly Bellys. :) Safe travels!

Oh, hehehe, hahaha! The "goot beer" story was too cute. Dean and I laughed and laughed!

Comfort food: I make a cup of Target brand Mexican Hot Chocolate and add a heaping spoon of sugar free French Vanilla Creamer. Then I cook a couple of pieces of toast. YUM!
