I tried to be brave, but instead I almost passed out

So I have this freckle on my forearm. Or had, until today. It had been changing in strange ways, itching, turning red, and really behaving in a non-freckly way. So I went to the Dr. this morning, and she looked at it for a few seconds and then said, “We should take this off. We can do it today. Right now. Is that ok?”

Uh. Okay?

I neglected to mention that it was 10:30 a.m. and I hadn’t eaten breakfast… you know where this is going.

I made it fine through the first and third parts (the first part being the lidocaine shot, and third part being me laying on the table with one nurse standing by to make sure I was ok, while the other stitched), but the second part.. not so good. That was me sitting in a chair with my arm up on the table. With the room spinning, everyone suddenly receding to a distance of about 6 miles, and me beginning to feel the world go dark as I retched into their garbage can. Totally not my finest hour.

But after some soda and a few minutes’ rest, and climbing up on the table, we proceeded to the third part, which was better. :)

But! I came home with three neat stitches. Some fancy “Tuba tues” (which she told me is the Southern way to say “gauze pads” - ha! I guess it’s a corruption of “two by twos”), and I will know the results after Thanksgiving. I’m not sure how to feel about this yet. Except that it’s a good excuse to have a nap today. ;) And perhaps treat myself to a milkshake later. Am I the only one who associates milkshakes with having done well at the Dr’s office?) After all, doing well for two parts out of three isn’t bad…

I so feel for you. Been there - done that - except it was on my back and my back is really ticklish. Alas! I would so go with a milkshake after that ordeal. Take it easy!

I handle doctors really well, good thing since I have had a host of orthopedic problems, but I had a freckle on my ear that was doing funky things and I thought I was going to lose it when they took that one out.

Enjoy your milkshake and have one for me (I can't have them - no milk products any more!)

I think that is definitely cause to have a nap...sounds dreadful. Hope it heals up nicely and the the results are good.

Take care!

I love milkshakes after going to the doctor's! I think I started a bad habit with my son though too. They're not really good with congestion, the milk doesn't help!

I am so sorry. Been there, done that, too, except I cry like a toddler thanks to my terribly low pain threshold. It doesn't help at all, but I tell myself nothing is as hard as labor and child birth. I keep hoping in painful situations thinking about child birth will take my mind off the current pain, but it doesn't. Maybe I should start thinking about milkshakes instead...mmm, banana milkshakes from the year-round DQ drive through. Yum.

You totally earned both a milkshake and a nap!

Hugs, quietness and naps; you have earned it.

Go ahead - take the milkshake - or two! You've deserved it!!!
November 20, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterArya
well you certainly have earned the milkshake! you are in my special prayers that the freckle is just a rogue freckle trying to get attention....

A Nap and a milkshake will work wonders! Sorry to hear you had a not-so fun day. I'll be sending good thoughts your way! {{{Hugs}}}

Your post just reminded me that when I was younger, my dentist office always gave you a coupon to get a free milkshake from the drive-in across the street if you were "good" that day!!

Don't worry (easy to say, I know). 99% of the time it's no big deal. So enjoy Thanksgiving.

(PS - you can always claim the scar was from tangling with a rabid wolverine -or maybe pirates - it'll just add to your mystique!)

Wishing you all the best. Thank you for all that you do.

So sorry for the ordeal you had to endure, but it sounds like you were in the right place at the right time and needed to get this issue taken care of right away.

Praying it turns out to be "nothing" health-wise and that it will one day soon turn into a positive memory to add to your SiH journal ;) Get your rest and enjoy your milkshake!

Ugh. I went to the dermatologist a few months ago and had the same, "why don't we just do this right now so you don't have to come back" experience. Fortunately, I never leave the house without eating breakfast, so I didn't get the light-headed queasy problem. But I totally understand why it would make you barf! Don't be embarrassed! Doctors see far worse all the time and remain unphased.

Play some Warcraft and geek out tonight to reward yourself. Hope the results come back normal for you.

Being brave is so over rated. Enjoy your milkshake and be kind to yourself for the rest of the day. Hope everything works out OK.

Tuba tues...... that's hilarious! I've never heard that, and I'm from Alabama!!! :D
A shake after seeing the doc works for me! Cheers!!!

I faint at the sight of blood . . .especially my own, so I'm right there witcha! As for the waiting for the test results, I've been in those shoes more times than I care to admit. The November issue of Real Simple magazine quoted Richard Adell of Own your Own Life "Anxiety is the space between the 'now' and the 'then' " Be patient . . .be well.

You poor little thing! No need to feel bad...it happens all the time. You were brave! Love the 2x2 reference.

Ugh, I'm so sorry!! You hereby have permission from all of us random people on the intertubes to relax, pamper yourself and eat all the chocolate (and milkshakes) you want.

I'm sending good thoughts your way!

Ya sucked me in with the post title! Quite catchy. :)
You poor thing! I'm glad you got it taken care of though. Yes - two out of three is good. ;D Was it worth it?

Oh, Momma wanted me to tell you this. She had a "knot" (cyst) taken off her head a couple days ago and has two stitches at the top of her forehead. I think she can relate to you, except for the whole fainting part. :)

I've got my green shoes on! ;) And if you want to visit my blog, you can see a really cute (if I may say so myself) bag I made. It's green!

Praying the test results come back fine!

Oh, boy...sounds just like a busy Mom! I would frequently run out of the house, always making sure that the kids were well fed, then realizing half way to wherever I was rushing to that I hadn't taken the time to eat! You poor thing. Most common reason why people feel faint is low blood sugar. Adrenaline (which you have a ton of when they tell you something like that) eats up blood sugar faster than you can say "Tuba Tues"! A deadly combo: Low blood sugar+stress+pain=ADRENALINE OVERLOAD=Faint.
Hugs...happens to the best of us.

Totally get the milkshake thing!!! Sorry about The Incident, but happy that you are okay now.
November 20, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterJenna
Holy moley! You are a total trooper, Jes! Everyone's permitted to freak out at Step 2, as long as you get through Step 3 fine! ;) Now go and get yourself 10 milkshakes--you deserve it, my friend! (((hugs)))

Bless Your Heart - I'm glad they took care of it - but sorry you had to have a doctor's breakfast (i've had some of those myself)
November 20, 2008 | Unregistered CommenterMarie T
Milkshakes are way better than stickers. Well, maybe unless they're some really nice scrapbooking stickers. :) I hope the test results come back OK. *hugs*

EVERY visit to the doctor's office should be followed by ice cream. Whether it is a milkshake, sundae, Blizzard, ice cream cone is up to the patient.

By the way, that kind of stuff (freckle removal) makes my knees go weak too.

... Blog surfing and found your site, hope i can still take your class. I'm poking around and loved how you shared your story ... i went to the Dermatologist today, appears i am getting old.... have my first age spots in addition to other junk.
lovely.

TOTALLY associate success at the Dr. with a milkshake - but today it was a Soda, pending which Dr. i get some gourmet coffee, with whip cream of course! My kids dr used to give them a PRESCRIPTION! for ice cream - and we took it to the local place for a small cone! loved it!

thanks for sharing!
