Rowen teaches mama about bugs.

Creepies.

Crawlies.

Buzzers.

Totally not the kind of thing I’m usually into. Not by a long shot. I don’t mind snakes. I’ve held a rat or two. But if you’ve got more than 6 legs, buddy, you are not welcome.

Two things have worked together to change this for me this week:

1. Rowen is studying bugs in preschool. She came home with a bug catcher AND lectured me that ants are good! when I squished one in the house the other day. Then I had to sigh and explain that “good” has varying definitions depending on whether the creature is inside or outside my bathroom. Outside? Good. Inside? Meet Mr. Paper Towel and Take a Ride on the Toilet Express… or better yet, call Jared and tell him there’s a HUGE spider *sob* and can’t he come and get it? (hehe).

2. Anyway. The bug catcher has suddenly got her interested in bugs of all kinds! With any number of legs, and lengths of body, and while these words would normally leave me feeling queasy, my Mama-hood takes over, and puts on a Brave, Bright Face and says, WOW! Look at that great big.. thing! Yay! Oh gosh, doesn’t THAT one have a lot of … colors on it? Because having kids run from harmless bugs isn’t a good way to grow up, right? I want them to experience the world around them with as little inherited bias about crawlies as I can. And I can push the limits a bit if it’s for my kids. A bit. After all, isn’t parenthood as much about learning our own capacities as it is about teaching anyone else anything? :)

Lucky for me and my Brave Face, though, I happen not to be too grossed out by caterpillars, and also lucky for us, there are LOTS of caterpillars around these days. Rowen learned all about them in preschool, and now gets the opportunity to learn how to treat even the smallest creatures with gentleness. We found this fella in the backyard today:

I love this shot for a lot of reasons, but the main ones are the look on Rowen’s face and the gentleness of her hand. I LOVE that. I pity any creature that finds itself in the backyard of curious toddlers/preschoolers, but this girl just wanted to hold the caterpillar, find it some food, and give it a home in an old plastic cup. She even named it “Stripey Caterpillar” (we are very into descriptive names), and had to go check on it the second she woke up from her nap. And you know what? I think Stripey Caterpillar is .. kinda cute. :)

OK, so bugs for you snakes for me... And as luck would have it, Markus has a snake project for science class that has to be 3-D. That is so not cool cause as much as I enjoy helping with this type of crafty stuff, I don't enjoy the snakes..

That photo is gorgeous! And your post is so true. Except for snakes and lizards. Can't do snakes and lizards.

I totally had to laugh at this post, especially the part about calling your husband. I can usually handle a bug or two, but if it comes from a really unexpected place, like the shower curtain, or if it is one that can potentially jump at me, it is time to call Jeremy. :) LOVE, LOVE your photo!! Completely awesome!

Jessica, wow you've been busy this week! Sunday really must have energized you! I cried when I read your Sunday post, mostly because I had just been there myself, and God had so graciously given me the same reminder. With so many of us so hungry for a little more of his "attention" in life, it's mindboggling for me to even think of how much of Him there must be.

And I just have to say that I love reading your posts. You have such a unique, joyous and yet real take on life, it's ups and downs and still relishing it all...even the creepy crawly parts of it. Having two boys forever changed my outlook on those parts of creation that I would rather pretend are not there, especially when I lost the "Mom, I want a lizard" battle. I could write a book on what I learned about life from that ugly lizard!

And thanks for the encouragement to take a little risk...have been sitting on the fence with that one for awhile. And its way past time for me to get out of the comfort zone. Keep doing what you do...you inspire us all! Who knows? Maybe I'll take that class in June...

Ah there it is. Mr. Creepy Crawly Bug (should be spelled B-ugh, methinks :D ) Totally agree with you on every point: let them play with them and cherish them and love them and put them in little plastic cups... just keep them an arm's length away from me (or more). hoho. And I am not even going to mention that R-bug word. ;)

Yep, let the kids not inherit our compulsion to shudder and flee. I truly believe this: because my sons have to be able to squish them for me when I run screaming! :D

Rowen and her pure little gentle hand and that precious, precious smile on her face: now that would make any mama want to say "hmmm, he is so gorgeous, honey! Now let's get Stripey into his little cup-bed and put the roof on real tight." :D

Seriously, you are an awesome mama! I celebrate you!

Jessica,
My daughter is six years old and still loves the bugs! She has spent hours in our backyard this spring collecting rollie-pollies and other critters. She even checked out a book from the library to help her classify the different bugs she finds in the backyard. So, you might be in for a few years of this. It is so funny because my daughter is such a girly girl in many ways, but she cannot get enough of the bugs for some reason. Enjoy.

I live near you (N. Raleigh) and boy oh boy we've been overrun with those caterpillars too... I think I read they are "Eastern Tent" caterpillars. I was secretely hoping they'd turn into lovely butterflies, but I don't think they do. My 4 yo was also obsessed. She also likes to try to keep ants and snails as pets. :)

Caterpillars are OK, so are ladybugs. I've been trying not to freak out too much around bugs when my son is near, I don't want him to have irrational fears. :) I actually did a post recently of creepy crawlies!

We have all the bugs here, too, but we are also overrun with lizards. Kids at my daughter's school love to catch lizards. I don't mind them, they're not "buggy" like slimy or furry bugs are. It's the spiders the size of apples I can't stand!!!

I find it very poignant that following your post on taking risks, you have this post about cultivating and supporting your daughter's passion, despite your aversion to the insect kingdom. :) As a long time early childhood person, I find this refreshing and want to give you a big hug to congratulate you. It takes courage to let our children become the people God created them to be.

Awesome.

the picture is priceless and getting to bask in the wonder and excitment of kids every day (between teaching 17 first graders and loving my 2 and 8 year old boys) i've learned that you just gotta put all that adult-girl stuff aside and live it up! :) way to go with mr. stripey!

Lovely photo, My DD is also a bug lover. We have a shelf of bugs IN JARS. Wanted to say a big thanks for making PSE look simple. Got your "Computer Tricks 2" and learned more in five minutes than in the 5 years of having PSE3. I am looking forward to taking the upcoming class, (hope I can get in). It was so nice to meet you at CKU Chicago. Thanks a million.

I love that about parenthood - the brave face of things we don't particularly want around us. I've had 2 crayfish come home after the 4th grade science unit and I've been amazed at how attached I become to the critters. I'm probably the saddest person in the house when it dies. Without my kids no way no how would I be near something like that.

A LOT of caterpillars are around this year, aren't they? My four year old loves them - holds them - pets them. My two year old squishes them without meaning to and then wonders why they aren't moving. I hate spiders though - and my kids are only interested in snakes, so good for me - bad for my hubby (he is a scaredy cat)!
Great photo of Rowen, I have been trying to get a pic of Aidan holding one - no luck yet!
