Tweetsie Weekend

We got back yesterday afternoon from a long weekend in the mountains of NC. Refreshed, relaxed, and excited to get our birthday celebration underway! :D

We spent Saturday at the Tweetsie Railroad. We rode Thomas the Tank, who was attached to the regular locomotive, and since our ride time was 9 a.m. we were there WAY before any crowds, and spent almost 2 hours just hopping on anything we wanted to ride. (is it me, or is the ferris wheel there REALLY SCARY? I thought I was going to pass out, whizzing through the air on this spindly little thing. *shudder*).

Tweetsie is built around one of the last remaining steam locomotives from the East Tennessee and Western North Carolina railroad, and the engine that pulled us was built in 1917. It was so cool. The park is small enough that we could just relax and take our time exploring.

The kids loved it. We loved it, all except for the part where (wait for it) I forgot my camera. So the only pictures we have of our first visit to Tweetsie are the ones we took on our cell phones (the one above is from their web site). On the plus side, I didn’t lug a camera around. So there’s that. Trying to stay positive. :)

We have loved our visits to the mountains over the past couple months - something about getting away, even just a couple hours away, helps me refocus on what’s most important to me.

I hope you had an awesome weekend, and you’re looking forward to celebrating with us next week!

been there (tweetsie railroad 10yrs ago)
done that (forgot my camera)
we are leaving for NC on Fri ,but for us it is a 14 hour drive
my son is there as a intern at a nice country club and i miss him, so we are taking a mini road trip.
but now that the little ones are now 15 and 19, tweetsie isn't one of our plans
we will be surprising them with a hot air balloon ride.
have a wonderful summer

I am from Las Vegas and we just got back from a cross country car towing our camper trip where one of our last stops was at Tweetsie to see Thomas. It rained most of the time but we still had a really fun time. But I think the highlight for me was trying Chick Fil A for the first time! I did not ride the ferris wheel, but the chair lift ride had me praying :)

Hey Jessica, wasn't the thomas thing fun? We did it on Thursday (my kids first time) and we had a blast (well...except for the rainshowers part...lol). Anyways, I took a zillion pics if you want to borrow some (well, the ones without my kids in them anyway...hahaha). Anyways, the ferris wheel was one of my favs, but you're right...it's scarier than it looked.

This is so crazy. Me and my family were in Boone NC this past weekend too. We drove by Tweetsie many times Friday and Saturday but didn't stop. We have 3 teenage daughters and they really didn't want to follow their four year old sister around Tweetsie Railroad. I think I would have freaked had I saw you!!! Oh so close but not to be. Sure glad you all had a great time! We were visiting family there and spent most of our time in Blowing Rock @ Art in the Park. A really fun weekend!!!

Loved Tweetsie to see Thomas, but those rides are so old they scarce the bejeezus out of me. We live about an hour from there! I skipped it this year. The kids just don't care about Thomas anymore to warrant the expense. :-) Gotta try Dollywood in Pigeon Forge TN, they have a beautiful train there too.

Our boys love Tweetsie, and yes, the ferris wheel is scary. It is a great park for the younger ones! Some other favorites of ours from Boone and Blowing Rock are the Daniel Boone Inn (yummy southern cooking--think food like ham biscuits and strawberry shortcake), hiking at the Linn Cove Viaduct (http://www.blueridgeparkway.org/linncove.htm), Mystery Hill (cheesy, but your kids will love it), and Linville Caverns. We also enjoyed the park in the middle of downtown Blowing Rock. It had a nice playground with lots of shade trees, too. Enjoy your trips to the mountains!
